Admission requirements for students from foreign countries are the same as for domestic students. In addition, international applicants from non-English speaking countries must demonstrate proficiency in English by completing one year of study with a minimum GPA of 3.00 at an accredited college or university in the United States, OR by obtaining the following minimum scores on the Test Of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – administered by ETS (http://www.ets.org/toefl), or the IELTS - International English Language Testing System (administered by the University of Cambridge, the British Council, and IELTS Australia (http://www.ielts.org):
| Test Type | Minimum Score |
| TOEFL Paper Based Test | 550 |
| TOEFL Computer Based Test | 213 |
| TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test) | 80 |
| IELTS | 7 |
The Graduate Division will evaluate foreign transcripts to verify BA/BS equivalency for those individuals who have applied. International students who are accepted for admission must provide evidence of sufficient financial resources to support their study at UCSF
The Office of Services to International Students and Scholars (SISS) is responsible for providing visa services and advising. Although international students may be approved for admission based on academic criteria, SISS cannot issue a certificate of eligibility for nonimmigrant student status until the applicant provides evidence of sufficient financial resources.
Admitted students are required to complete the Confidential Financial Statement which is sent with the offer of admission by the Graduate Division. If the financial statement indicates that the student has sufficient resources to attend UCSF, the certificate of eligibility for nonimmigrant student status will be mailed to the applicant. Further information regarding requirements for international students may be found at http://student.ucsf.edu/siss.
