Graduate Division Awards

Graduate students may be nominated by their Program Directors for UCSF Graduate Division Awards, including Diversity Awards. Nominations are due in May for the following academic year. Unless otherwise stated, awards are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and foreign nationals who are entering their first through sixth years of study with GPAs of 3.0 or better. Nominations are reviewed and ranked by the Graduate Council Fellowship Sub-Committee. All UCSF Graduate Division Fellowships are subject to the Graduate Division's terms and conditions.

Graduate Division Awards Criteria

Nominations that are reviewed by the Graduate Council Fellowship Sub-Committee are evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Extent and quality of previous academic work
  • Evidence of research ability
  • Promise of productive scholarship
  • GRE scores (first-year students only)
  • Grade Point Average
  • Some awards have additional criteria -- please see award descriptions for details

Additionally, nominees for Diversity Awards are also evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Experience, situations, or conditions that impeded advancing to graduate study, such as the absence of a family member who attended college; matriculation at a school with poor financial or curricular support; having a disability; or having worked long hours while attending school; or
  • Academic research interests focusing on cultural, societal, or educational problems as they affect educationally disadvantaged segments of society; or
  • Evidence of an intention to use the doctoral degree toward serving educationally underrepresented segments of society.
  • Program Directors are encouraged to nominate minorities and individuals from cultural, linguistic, geographic and socio-economic backgrounds who are underrepresented in graduate student and faculty populations.
