Fellowship Opportunities

Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute: This non-profit, non-partisan organization provides leadership development programs and educational services for Hispanic students, an awards scholarships to Latino students in most need of financial assistance. Full time students of all majors are encouraged to apply.

The National Academies: The National Academies offer several different fellowships in science, engineering and medicine.

Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships: For U.S. citizens or nationals in research-based fields, grants for predoctoral, dissertation and postdoctoral work.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund: The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the largest Hispanic scholarship-granting organization in the nation. The College Scholarship Program is available to full-time students at an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. This scholarship is available on a competitive basis to both undergraduate and graduate students.

National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH): The purpose of the Biomedical Research Training Program for Underrepresented Minorities (BRTPUM), sponsored by NHLBI, is to enhance career opportunities for underrepresented students in biomedical research, including clinical and laboratory medicine, epidemiology, and biostatistics as applied to the etiology and treatment of heart, blood vessel, lung and blood health and diseases, and sleep disorders.

National Science Foundation (NSF): The National Science Foundation aims to ensure the vitality of the human resource base of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the United States and to reinforce its diversity by offering approximately 1,000 graduate fellowships in this competition. The Graduate Research Fellowship provides three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study. The Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) invests in graduate education for a cadre of diverse individuals who demonstrate their potential to successfully complete graduate degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of the National Science Foundation.

President's Postdoctoral Fellowship: The University of California President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program was established in 1984 to encourage outstanding women and minority Ph.D. recipients to pursue academic careers at the University of California. The current President's Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is open to all qualified candidates who are committed to university careers in research, teaching, and service that will enhance the diversity of the academic community at the University of California.

The UNCF•MERCK Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowships: The College Fund/UNCF and The Merck Company Foundation have collaborated to bring an exciting initiative to colleges and universities across the country. This program is designed to increase the number of African Americans in the pipeline of biomedical science education and research. Twelve awards will be made in 2006. Each award of up to $52,000 consists of a fellowship stipend up to $42,000 and department grant up to $10,000.
