NIGMS fellows are typically selected in their first year at UCSF, and receive financial support for five years of their degree program. This support is provided by his/her academic department in the first year, and by the NIGMS award for the next four years. Details regarding support from the NIGMS award are as follows:
Each student receives an annual salary, which is confirmed in June for the following academic year. Salaries are paid in arrears, so your first payment will be made on the first day of the month following your employment start date. Checks will be disbursed monthly by the UCSF payroll department. The method of payment (direct deposit or paper check) depends on the student's academic program. Taxes are withheld from all salary payments. Additional withholding applies during the summer. Student fees for NIGMS fellows are paid by the University.
Tuition for first-year NIGMS fellows who are not permanent residents of California is paid by the student's academic department. New students should establish California state residency, at which point tuition is waived. Information about residency requirements is available through the Office of the Registrar.
Beginning in their second year, UCSF NIGMS IMSD Fellows are provided with funds for travel to give presentations at conferences and scientific meetings. Fellows can use up to $1,500 for travel initiated by December 31, 2009. Funds that are not used are not rolled over into the next year. In order to use these travel funds, a request must be submitted to the UCSF Graduate Division at least 30 days in advance. Forms and instructions for submission are provided here (.pdf).
