Mommy and Daddy (MAD) Scientists

This group was started by and for postdoc parents at UCSF to provide the opportunity to meet other postdoc parents and share insights on their struggles as well as successes.

Membership is open to moms and dads of young children or those expecting children. It is also open to any postdocs (non-parents) who are curious about how other postdocs are handling the balance of family/career and issues specific to UCSF and living in the Bay Area. However, MADS would like the core of the group to consist of current/expecting parents to establish a support network and share resources, as there is not currently anything in place at UCSF for postdoc parents.

MADS welcomes other "trainee" scientists at UCSF in addition to postdocs (i.e., graduate students and junior faculty) to discuss how parenting impacts developing careers and for mutual support.

The regular group meetings are casual gatherings over coffee/lunch during the weekday, once or twice per month (just parents, no kids). At these meetings, members get to know each other and discuss a variety of postdoc/parenting issues. As membership grows, MADS hopes to organize other activities such as playgroups or field trips with the kids on the weekends.
