Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowships for Minorities: To increase the presence of underrepresented minorities on the nation's college and university faculties, to enhance diversity on campuses, and to address the persisting effects of past discrimination, the Ford Foundation offers predoctoral fellowships to members of six minority groups whose underrepresentation in the professoriate has been severe and long-standing. The fellowship program identifies individuals with demonstrated ability and provides them the opportunity to engage in graduate study leading to a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree. Approximately 60 predoctoral fellowships will be awarded in a national competition administered by the National Research Council (NRC) of the National Academies on behalf of the Ford Foundation. Hispanic Scholarship Fund: The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the largest Hispanic scholarship-granting organization in the nation. The College Scholarship Program is available to full-time students at an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Puerto Rico. This scholarship is available on a competitive basis to both undergraduate and graduate students. Awards generally range from $1,000 to $3,000. Deadline: October 15, 2003.
National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH): The NHLBI offers training programs and research supplements for minority undergraduate students. The programs are designed to encourage undergraduate students to consider a career in biomedical or behavioral science and to provide students an opportunity to learn more about the different research careers available. UNCF-Merck Undergraduate Science Research Scholarship Award: The College Fund/UNCF and The Merck Company Foundation have collaborated to bring an exciting initiative to colleges and universities across the country. This program is designed to increase the number of African Americans in the pipeline of biomedical science education and research. Fifteen awards will be made in 2004. Each award, up to $35,000, consists of a scholarship and two summer internship stipends. Deadline: December 15, 2003.
Robert D. Watkins Minority Graduate Fellowship: The Robert D. Watkins Minority Graduate Fellowship is aimed at highly competitive minority graduate students who are enrolled in a Ph.D. program and who have completed their graduate course work in the microbiological sciences. The goal of the fellowship is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities completing doctoral degrees in the microbiological sciences. The program provides a total stipend of $57,000 for a three year period (September 2005-June 2008). Students will receive six stipend payments. Funds cannot be used for tuition and fees.
