How did you hear about the SRTP?
I heard about the SRTP both though UCLA's Undergraduate Research center and from a former SRTP participant.

What were your expectations going in to the program? Did the program meet these expectations?
From what I had previously heard about the program, I thought that I would be presented with an excellent opportunity to develop my scientific thinking. The program helped me meet this expectation by placing me in an excellent, highly productive, and enthusiastic laboratory. Outside of the lab I also got a chance to meet with several prominent individuals from all the various areas of study at UCSF. I definitely came out of the program as a better scientist.

What did you learn / what skills did you acquire? Did you learn anything unexpected?
My research was concerned with the association of HSV-1 (Herpes Simplex Virus, Type 1) with the nerve axon in murine optic pathway. Techniques used included protein quantification assays, running SDS-PAGE gels, performing Western Blots, and performing co-immunoprecipitations of proteins. Also just as important, I learned how to maintain a well organized laboratory notebook -- something which at first seems trivial, but is actually crucial for proper scientific research.

What did you think of the learning environment?
In the case of the lab that I was assigned to, it could not have been any better. The lab group was very welcoming from the outset and was always there for me when I needed help. My primary investigator was very enthused about her research and she made sure to funnel that energy into me and the rest of the group as well. The environment was what made going to work a pleasure each day.

What are your future plans? Did the SRTP have any influence on these plans?
Having recently graduated, I am working in an Anesthesia basic science research laboratory at UCLA while applying to medical school. I have a strong desire to become a physician, however, because of the SRTP I also intend to stay close to the research aspect of healthcare advancement. I am still not sure whether I would like to take a straight MD route or an MD/PhD route instead.

Would you recommend SRTP to other students in your field of study?
Absolutely! It is a great opportunity for those in the life sciences. Whether you are passionate about research or are still looking for a 'scientific spark,' I think that it provides the student with a worthwhile and wonderful summer experience.
