The following students are eligible to apply to the UCSF Summer Research Training Program, Amgen Scholars Program, and Research Experience for Undergraduates:
- US Citizens or Permanent Residents
- Students with a desire to pursue a Ph.D., or M.D.-Ph.D.
- Students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or master's degree program who will have completed at least 4 semesters or 4 quarters of college work at the start of the summer program and have prior research experience
- Non-graduating seniors, seniors who do not plan to begin graduate study in the fall immediately following graduation, and continuing master's students.
- Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher are eligible for the Amgen Scholars Program
- Underrepresented minority, socio-economically disadvantaged, first-generation college students, and students with limited access to research laboratories are particularly encouraged to apply
- Prior research can be an asset, but is not required
A committee of UCSF faculty members reviews each component of all completed applications. Applicants are evaluated according to the following criteria:
- College-level coursework - Students should have successfully completed basic science coursework appropriate for their program of study.
- Research Experience - While prior research experience is preferred, students who lack such experience are still eligible to apply.
- Personal Statement - Students can elaborate on their academic and research experience, as well as their research interests and future goals and aspirations. Applicants may use their personal statement to discuss circumstances by which they have been unable to participate in laboratory research.
- Letters of Recommendation - The most useful and effective letters of recommendation come from individuals who can speak directly about the applicant's academic/research experience, future goals, and potential for success in graduate study and a career in research. It is more important to select someone who has worked with you directly than someone who has a prestigious title but knows very little about you.
