Participants

Mentors

Students are matched with a faculty mentor after they have accepted our offer to participate in the SRTP. You will be notified by email when the matches are complete. Once you have your mentor assignment, you should visit his/her laboratory website to learn more about the research you will be doing for the summer. You may then contact your mentor to introduce yourself, discuss his/her research further, and ask for ways to prepare for the work you will be doing (such as articles to read).

Travel & Local Transportation

Airline Travel

The SRTP coordinator will book your airline travel to and from San Francisco to participate in the program based on the information you provide on the Travel and Interim Contact Information Form (unless otherwise arranged). Participants should plan to arrive the weekend of May 31, 2009; students on the quarter system should plan to arrive in San Francisco immediately following the completion of their spring academic term. We will also provide you with vouchers to take a shuttle from the airport to the dormitory.

Driving to San Francisco

If you choose to drive to San Francisco, we will reimburse you for mileage driven up to the cost of a coach, round-trip airline ticket that we would have purchased for you. (For example, if your total mileage reimbursement to/from San Francisco was more than the cost of an airline ticket, we will only reimburse you up to the cost of the ticket.) We do not reimburse you for meals during your drive. You will need to submit a Travel Expense Reimbursement Form detailing your mileage expense.

Getting Around San Francisco

We will provide each participant with a monthly MUNI pass that is good for unlimited rides on SFMUNI, the San Francisco public transportation system. UCSF provides free shuttle service between the UCSF campuses across the city (and to your dorm in the evening).

Housing

All SRTP participants will be staying in Pedro-Arrupe Hall, a dormitory owned by the University of San Francisco. It is just two miles from the UCSF Parnassus Campus and easily accessible by public transportation (for which we will give you a monthly pass).

Address

Pedro-Arrupe Hall 490 Sixth Avenue San Francisco, CA 94118 Front Desk Phone: (415) 571-4020

Linens

One set of bed linens will be provided for you; however, if you choose to bring your own, note that the beds have extra-long twin size mattresses. Leave the linens there when you check out. You'll need to bring your own towels.

Telephone and Internet Service

Phones will be provided in each room. Each phone will have voice mail that you can set up, and local phone service. You will need a calling card or cell phone for long distance calls. Each room is equipped with an Ethernet connection. The dormitory has a small computer room, but we are not guaranteed to have access to these machines. If you do not have your own computer, you may use the computers in your lab on campus.

Laundry

There are coin-operated laundry machines in the basement.

Kitchen

We will provide a mini-fridge and microwave in each room that you will share with your roommate. The dorm also has a full kitchen right off the first floor lounge with an oven, stove, sink, toaster and coffee maker. The dorm has a set of cookware (pots, pans) that you can check out with your ID, but we suggest that you bring your own set of basic cookware (pot, pan, cookie sheet, utensils) and dinnerware (plate, bowl, utensils, cups) to use. Talk with your roommate to see if you can share some of these items. Students are responsible for cleaning up after themselves, and we will monitor this carefully.

Parking

The dorm does not have a parking lot; if you are bringing your car you will have to park your car on neighborhood streets. You do not need a residential permit, but the street cleaners come once a week so make sure you pay attention to the signs posted. Campus parking is not provided. Campus lots cost about $20 per day, and street parking on neighborhood streets is often restricted (and hard to come by when it's not). You will be better off taking public transportation and the UCSF campus shuttles (if your lab is not at Parnassus).

Bikes

Bike storage can be arranged.

Other Services

Fitness Facilities

There are fitness centers located at both the Parnassus (Millberry Fitness Center) and Mission Bay (Bakar Fitness Center) campuses. SRTP participants will be able to join one or both of these facilities for a fee (TBA).

Health Services

Participants in the SRTP will be able to use UCSF Student Health Services center at the Mission Bay campus for their primary health care needs (the center at Parnassus will be closed for the summer of 2006). Additional information will be provided at orientation.

Health Insurance

If you have your own health insurance, be sure to bring your insurance card with you this summer! If you requested health insurance from UCSF, we will give you your insurance card and details about coverage at orientation. UCSF health insurance for the summer does not include dental coverage.
