Info for Faculty Mentors

Dear UCSF LEADS Faculty Mentor:

Welcome to the UC Leadership Excellence through Advanced Degrees Program (UC LEADS) as a faculty mentor. Thank you for your participation in this innovative program that began in 1999. Since UCSF does not have its own undergraduates, students are "borrowed" from other UC campuses. We appreciate your willingness to be a UCSF LEADS mentor.

The goal of UC LEADS is to educate California's future leaders by preparing promising students for advanced education in science, mathematics and engineering. The program is designed to support upper-division undergraduate students with the potential to succeed in these disciplines, but who have experienced situations or conditions that have adversely impacted advancement in their field of study. Once chosen as UC LEADS Scholars, the students embark upon a two-year program of scientific research and graduate school preparation guided by individual Faculty Mentors. Scholars are provided with an excellent opportunity to explore their discipline, experience a research environment, and improve their opportunities for future study in their chosen field. The Scholar gains valuable educational experience, the University a better prepared and more diverse graduate applicant pool, and the State, well-educated future leaders. As a UCSF LEADS faculty mentor, you will assist your scholar in designing a plan of research and enrichment activities fitted to [his/her] individual interests and academic goals. Each scholar is provided an annual budget for each summer and academic year in this two-year program. The scholar and mentor prepare an "Action Plan" based on the annual budget and submit to the UCSF LEADS program. The funds can be applied to any of the following:

  • academic year research stipend;
  • summer research stipend;
  • participation in the University-wide UC LEADS Symposium;
  • attendance at professional or scientific society meetings;
  • journal subscriptions and organizational memberships;
  • laboratory equipment/ supplies;
  • travel to another UC campus; and
  • academic enrichment activities, including preparation for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

Please review the information below about UCSF LEADS faculty mentor responsibilities. Please feel free to contact me at anytime with questions or comments.

Sincerely,

Christine D. Des Jarlais, Ed.D.
