Graduate Dean's Dissertation Completion Fellowship


Purpose

The Graduate Dean's Dissertation Completion Fellowship provides social science doctoral students in their final year with financial support to focus full-time on research and writing. The objective is to remove obstacles to the timely completion of the dissertation and to improve the quality of the work. This fellowship is designed to provide three quarters of support to a PhD student in global health sciences, history of health sciences, medical anthropology, nursing, or sociology to enable them to complete and submit their dissertation by the end of the fellowship period. The student MUST file their dissertation by the last day of the third quarter of support; if this goal is not met, the program may no longer be eligible to nominate students for this award.

Eligibility

  • PhD students in global health sciences, history of health sciences, medical anthropology, nursing, or sociology who are in their final year
  • In their third to seventh year of study, with all requirements completed except for dissertation
  • U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or AB 540

Support

  • Two awards
  • Two quarters of resident tuition and fees (fall and winter terms) and one quarter of filing fee (spring term)
  • $26,563 stipend (2021-22), divided equally over a 10 month period, September - June
  • The award is not renewable

Notes

Program directors may nominate up to two students. The nomination must include:

  • a letter of nomination from the program director
  • a letter of support from the dissertation chair (co-signed by the other members of the dissertation committee)
  • a 300-word abstract of the dissertation
  • a detailed chapter outline, up to 5 pages in length
  • a month-by-month plan explaining the timeline toward completion by June 14, 2020
