The Tetrad graduate program prepares students to address fundamental research problems in modern biology, with special emphasis on four core and interrelated areas indicated above. The program as a whole provides interdisciplinary training and opportunities in a congenial community of outstanding research laboratories. When you graduate from the Tetrad program, your PhD degree will be in either biochemistry and molecular biology, cell biology, or genetics, depending on your thesis work. However, all applicants to the program will go through the same admission process, and all students will have the same classes and requirements. The Tetrad program fosters a strong sense of community and cross-discipline collaboration through several program activities including an annual retreat held in Lake Tahoe; a weekly seminar program featuring top scientists from around the world; and multiple other activities that provide student/faculty interactions in both formal and informal settings.

Over 120 faculty members are associated with the Tetrad program, representing all of the basic science departments of UCSF; numerous research centers such as the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UCSF, and the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases; as well as numerous clinical departments.

Tetrad is a member of the the Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS) at UCSF.
