Welcome to UCSF Graduate Division

The Graduate Division at UCSF was established in 1961 to offer opportunities for graduate study in academic and professional fields within the health sciences. Now encompassing 18 degree programs, and approximately 1,400 graduate students, the campus can be justly proud of its graduate programs, which consistently rank among the top in the Nation. Several degree programs offered at UCSF are unique in the University of California system.

The Graduate Division Office is located in Millberry Union 200 West. It is headed by Graduate Dean, Patricia Calarco, PhD. The Graduate Council, a standing committee of the Academic Senate, serves as the advisory committee to the Graduate Division. Karen Nelson is the Assistant Dean for Graduate Academic Affairs, and Christine Des Jarlais is the Assistant Dean for Postdoctoral Affairs and Graduate Outreach.

Many clinical and basic science departments offer research training to individuals as postdoctoral scholars. They are recent recipients (within the last 10 years) of the Ph.D. or a professional doctorate, and come for further training in research under the direction of a faculty member. Appointment of postdoctoral scholars is in the Graduate Division which administers appointment procedures and other administrative matters on behalf of postdoctoral scholars. Appointments are initiated by the department or institute in which the scholar will study.

Policies regarding postdoctoral training are the responsibility of the Graduate Council of the Academic Senate and the Graduate Division. Dean Patricia Calarco is responsible for the administration of postdoctoral affairs and has final authority for all postdoctoral appointments. Postdoctoral scholars are sponsored by individual faculty members and are compensated through a variety of mechanisms.

UCSF’s AGEP Postdoc Bootcamp

Each year, UCSF’s Graduate Division invites advanced graduate students from around the country to attend "Postdoc Bootcamp," a 2-day intensive workshop designed to empower historically underrepresented students to find, secure, and get the most out of a postdoctoral position.

Bootcamp starts with an overview of what postdoctoral training entails and how it has become an essential stepping-stone toward an academic career.  Through career advancement workshops, engaging speakers, and faculty and scholar panels, aspiring postdocs will learn:

  • how to do the groundwork to find the right mentor — not only in terms of research focus — but also in terms of factors like the PI’s mentoring style; whether the atmosphere in the lab is conducive to collaboration and learning; and how the position will advance the postdoc’s career and life goals
  • how to present themselves to potential mentors in a way that will maximize their chances at getting the postdoc position they want
  • how to make the most out of their time as postdocs, ensuring that they are treated fairly and that their postdoc training is a springboard into a successful career
  • how to find and use the tools and resources that will help them to fund their training and research, including grants and fellowships especially targeted at underrepresented groups in the sciences
