MISSION
Our outreach mission is to develop and implement targeted recruitment strategies to expand the applicant pool for graduate and training programs. We believe that by intentionally engaging in outreach and recruitment to UCSF's graduate and training programs, we will enhance the Division of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs (GEPA) academic community and strengthen scientific excellence.
GOAL 1
Implement recruitment activities and strategies to attract applicants to UCSF's graduate and training programs.
Activities
The GEPA Student Affairs team implements the following activities and strategies:
- Summer Research Training Program (SRTP) - Engage undergraduate students in a summer research program where they engage in basic science research in UCSF labs, build a community of mentors and network, and learn about UCSF graduate programs.
- Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) - Provides opportunities for leadership, community engagement, and scientific training fo graduate students. IMSD serves as an appeal to prospective admitted students due to the fellowship and the unique IMSD community. Each year, GEPA Student Affairs staff engage in recruitment to IMSD during the PhD basic sciences programs interview weekends.
- Include graduate students in the recruitment activities
GOAL 2
Attend outreach events and conferences, and visit universities to increase knowledge about UCSF graduate and training programs.
Activities
The GEPA Student Affairs team coordinates with graduate students and faculty to attend conferences to promote UCSF's graduate and training programs. Our efforts at these conferences focus on connecting current students and faculty with prospective applicants who have exceptional research records. Application fee waivers are offered for prospective students who connect with one of our representatives at these conferences. Look for our exhibit booths at:
- Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS)
- Annual Meeting of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS)
- California Forum for Diversity in Graduate Education
Recruitment visits at California State Universities (CSU) & University of California Universities (UC)
GEPA coordinates faculty and student outreach visits to University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) campuses. During these visits, faculty and student presenters connect directly with local STEM offices and faculty allies to present to groups of interested undergraduates. The presenters share their research and provide information about UCSF’s graduate program and training programs.
