Our Mission
Graduate Student Affairs leads efforts that establish and promote a community-oriented learning and training environment for master’s and PhD students.
The programs and initiatives aim to:
- create opportunities to integrate student success as a core feature of the curriculum and training environment
- improve the learning and research environment to remove barriers to access and complement education and training for all students
- align student’s personal and professional identities

A fundamental component of the UCSF Graduate Division's mission is to foster an inclusive and supportive learning environment. Dr. D’Anne Duncan, assistant dean for graduate student affairs, and Yvonne Garcia, outreach program manager, help fulfill that mission by leading and implementing efforts to ensure that all summer undergraduates and graduate learners feel welcomed and supported. ► Dr. D’Anne Duncan and Dr. Jason Sello applied for and received grant funding to support the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) Program from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. We are eagerly working to recruit the next cohort of IMSD fellows. Learn more about the T32 IMSD grant.

We offer several courses for learners in various stages of their degree programs.
NIGMS/IMSD Fellows and Affiliates Program
The National Institute for General Medical Sciences Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (NIGMS/IMSD) Fellows and Affiliates Program at UCSF is designed to support PhD students in basic science graduate programs in the first two years of their studies.
Summer Research Training Program (SRTP)
UCSF’s major outreach program to recruit students to basic science PhD programs. Undergraduate students selected for the Summer Research Training Program (SRTP) spend up to 10 weeks working with UCSF faculty members on research projects.
We are dedicated to recruiting undergraduate and graduate students from groups that are historically marginalized and underrepresented in science.
We partner productively with campus units across the University.
