The 2022 Graduate Division Commencement Ceremony will take place on Friday, May 20, at 11 a.m. at the beautiful Herbst Theatre, in the Veterans Building at 401 Van Ness Avenue in downtown San Francisco! We look forward to celebrating this major milestone with our graduate students, their families and friends, and with our faculty and staff at UCSF, who also take great pride in our students' accomplishments. Remote viewers can join in by watching the commencement livestream.

PhD and master's students who are eligible to graduate this year received an invitation via email from the Graduate Division in early March.

This year's commencement speaker is Tejal Desai, PhD, professor of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences at UCSF. Dr. Desai is an alumna of the joint UCSF/UC Berkeley Graduate Program in Bioengineering, where she is now a full professor, director of an NIH training grant, and founding director of the joint program in Translational Medicine. She is also the inaugural director of the UCSF Engineering and Applied Sciences Initiative known as HIVE (Health Innovation Via Engineering). Technology Review named Desai one of its "Top 100 Young Innovators," and Popular Science named her one of its "Brilliant 10." Desai also received the Dawson Biotechnology Award. She currently serves as president of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and is an elected member of both the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Inventors. A vocal advocate for equity in STEM education, Desai also received the Judith Poole Award from the Association for Women in Science as well as the UCSF Chancellor Award for the Advancement of Women. Beginning in September 2022, Desai embarks on the next phase of her career as dean of the Brown University School of Engineering.

(Note that the Doctor of Physical Therapy program will hold a separate ceremony for DPT grads on June 10, 2022.)

UCSF is committed to providing accessible and inclusive programming to all participants. To request a reasonable accommodation for this event, please contact Erik Rotman at [email protected] by May 2, 2022.
