How to Apply for Extramural Fellowships

Most funding agencies post their requirements and application forms online. Please review the forms and requirements well in advance of the deadline. Refer to the instructions below to learn the process for extramural fellowship applications.

Federal/Government Awards

Applications for predoctoral fellowships and grants that are funded by federal or government agencies must be submitted through UCSF Research Management Services (RMS).

RMS requires a 30-day advance notice to assist you with your application.

This includes, but is not limited to funding from the following agencies:

  • Department of Defense
  • Department of Homeland Security
  • Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Program (Contact the Graduate Division if you intend to apply for this award.)
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Research Service Award (NRSA)
  • National Science Foundation (NSF) Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grants (DDRIG)
  • Other government agencies
  • Any postdoctoral fellowship/grant applications

You will need to work with RMS to have the proper forms prepared and other requirements. Contact your graduate program administrator to find out who your RMS team contact is.

NOTE: Applications for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) are submitted directly via NSF FastLane by the student and do not need to flow through RMS.

Non-Federal Awards

Students interested in applying for Non-Federal Awards need to contact Annabelle De La Rosa, Graduate Student Financial Analyst prior to beginning the application process. Annabelle will connect the student with the correct team member in the UCSF Research Management Services (RMS) office who will work with the student to facilitate the application process on behalf of the institution.

Sponsors of such fellowships include:

  • American Cancer Society
  • American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowship - see note below
  • California Breast Cancer Research Program
  • HHMI
  • Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program
  • UC MEXUS
  • Other non-government programs/fellowships that require the signature of an institutional official

NSF GRFP applications may be submitted directly to the agency via FastLane and do not require institutional approval.

Award Notification and Administration
If your application is successful and you receive an award, please be sure to notify both your graduate program administrator and Annabelle De La Rosa, so that your award can be administered properly. We will help ensure that you understand the terms of your award, know when to expect your payments, and meet all the requirements and obligations of your fellowship.
