Announcing Newest Curci Scholars and a New Phase of Curci Foundation Support

The Graduate Division is excited to announce its third cohort of UCSF Curci Scholars. As recipients of The Shurl and Kay Curci Foundation PhD Scholarship, these five first year students in the basic sciences will receive full financial support for the first two years of their PhD program.

Established by the Shurl and Kay Curci Foundation in 2021, the Curci Scholars program is dedicated to supporting basic science research in the life sciences, with a special emphasis on increasing recruitment of international students. UCSF was among six universities selected to participate in the initial phase of the program. (Others included UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, University of Washington, University of Utah, and University of Colorado Boulder.)

We are very pleased to announce that based on the success of the multi-year pilot program, beginning in January 2025, the Curci Foundation will commence a continuous PhD scholarship program, giving each participating university up to $1 million to provide Curci Scholars full stipend, tuition, non-residential supplemental tuition, and health insurance for their first two years at UCSF.

Dr. Nicquet Blake, dean of the Graduate Division and vice provost for Student Academic Affairs remarked, “The Shurl and Kay Curci Foundation’s generosity in funding the first two years of training for international students makes an enormous difference for them and supports our mission to bring more diverse voices into basic science.”
