UCSF Postdoc Named Fulbright Scholar

Logan Leak

One UC San Francisco (UCSF) postdoc has been named among the U.S. recipients of the 2026-27 Fulbright Scholar Awards. Logan Leak, PhD, of the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology, was selected for a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for the Netherlands to conduct research at the Netherlands Cancer Institute.

“As a child, I participated in soccer camps led by Dutch coaches who came to the U.S. each summer to teach American kids their unique style of playing,” said Leak. “For the past 17 years, my family has continued to host many of these coaches in our home, and this has given me a lasting appreciation for Dutch culture and international exchange. I'm excited to participate in the Fulbright Program because I can finally return that generosity by bringing my experience as a cancer biologist to the Netherlands Cancer Institute.”

Leak will study mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies in lung cancer. He received his PhD in cancer biology from Stanford University and his thesis work focused on characterizing a novel form of non-apoptotic cell death in the context of cancer. At UCSF, he’s a member of the Bivona Lab, where he is studying signaling pathways in lung cancer to provide insights into developing novel therapies for patients. He was also a 2025 Postdoc Slam participant.

The Fulbright Scholar Awards offer opportunities to conduct research abroad while strengthening professional development.
Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program is the United States government’s flagship program of international educational and cultural exchange, offers students and scholars in more than 160 countries the opportunity to study, teach, conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to mutual understanding.

Last year, UCSF was named a “Top Producing Institution for Fulbright U.S. Scholars” for the 2025–26 academic year, marking the ninth time since 2010 that the university received the distinction. The Fulbright program at UCSF is overseen by the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO), part of Graduate Education and Postdoctoral Affairs.
