Is the UC San Francisco Summer Research Training Program the same as the Amgen Scholars Program?
UC San Francisco is an Amgen Foundation Site. Amgen is one of several funding sources for the SRTP program, and all applicants must submit an SRTP application. All selected participants fall under the SRTP umbrella regardless of funding source.

I am an international student. May I apply?
No. Due to funding restrictions, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents at four-year colleges and universities in the United States, Puerto Rico, and other U.S. territories may participate in the program.
As a U.S. citizen or permanent resident attending a 4-year university or college outside of the United States, am I eligible to participate in the SRTP?
Funding for students who are a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident attending a 4-year university or college outside of the United States, Puerto Rico, or other U.S. territory may be eligible for our program and varies each year. Please contact us at [email protected] to check.
Is an official transcript required?
Copy or non-official transcripts should be uploaded into the application system during the application process. An official transcript is only required for students admitted to program.
What do you look for in an applicant? What will make my application stand out?
You must have previous research experience to be considered competitive. Be sure to provide reference letters from mentors who have had the opportunity to observe your work in the lab.
What happens if I am selected to participate in the SRTP and my spring semester/quarter ends after the move-in date?
You are still eligible to participate in the program, but you must contact us to discuss whether it is possible for you to join the program after the start date. Where possible, participants are urged to arrange for early examinations so they can benefit from the full curriculum and experience.
If I intend to apply to a medical school, school of dentistry, school of nursing, or a school of pharmacy in the future, am I eligible to participate in the SRTP?
No. The SRTP is intended specifically for students who plan to pursue a PhD, and it is specifically geared towards those preparing for research degrees. (See list.) When is the application deadline?
Applications are due by February 2, 2026 (11:58 p.m. PST).
Can I make changes to my application after it's been submitted?
No changes can be made to an application once it's been submitted.
For Admitted Students
What is the expected time commitment of the program?
Students are expected to participate in up to forty (40) hours per week. This forty-hour commitment will include research, professional development, group meetings, and community-building activities. All activities are mandatory.
Can I take courses or participate in other research opportunities while in SRTP?
No, you are not advised to participate in other research or academic activities while in SRTP. SRTP requires a 40-hour-a-week commitment.
How do I get paired with a funder?
Admitted students are paired with funders based on the funder's priorities (e.g., institutional background, disciplinary aspirations, etc).
How are admitted students placed with faculty mentors?
The SRTP admissions committee will assign mentors based upon your research interests expressed in your application and experience.
Do not contact faculty members directly to request a placement. All placements MUST be coordinated and approved by the faculty committee. Doing so may disqualify you from consideration
If admitted, do I have to live in the residence halls provided for me?
Yes, if admitted, you must live in the residence halls provided for you. It is not acceptable for you to live in a different residence. You are discouraged from applying if you can not commit to this. Furthermore, we do not support housing for spouses/partners and/or family members. Only emotional support animals will be considered for housing accommodations.
Are there meal plans included in residence halls?
No, meal plans are not available. You will be provided with a kitchen to cook your own meals.
Where will I live?

Where will my lab be?
There are two main UCSF campuses: Mission Bay and Parnassus. Depending on where your assigned lab is, you will be at one of these.
How do I get from my residence hall to UCSF?
You can use UCSF shuttles or public transportation (stipend provided for public transit)
