Is the UC San Francisco Summer Research Training Program the same as the Amgen Scholars Program?
UC San Francisco is an Amgen Foundation Site. Amgen is one of several funding sources for the SRTP program, and all applicants must submit an SRTP application. Other funding sources include NSF-REU, UCSF and Genentech. All selected participants fall under the SRTP umbrella regardless of funding source.
When does the program begin and end?
The program begins on Sunday, May 26, 2024 and ends on Friday, August 2, 2024.
I am an international student. May I apply?
No. Due to funding restrictions, only U.S. citizens and permanent residents at four-year colleges and universities in the United States, Puerto Rico, and other U.S. territories may participate in the program.
As a U.S. citizen or permanent resident attending a 4-year university or college outside of the United States, am I eligible to participate in the SRTP?
No, students must attend a 4-year university or college in the United States, Puerto Rico, or other U.S. territory to be eligible for our program.
Is an official transcript required?
An official transcript is not required to apply. Only non-official transcripts can be uploaded into the application system.
What do you look for in an applicant? What will make my application stand out?
You must have previous research experience to be considered competitive. Be sure to provide reference letters from mentors who have had the opportunity to observe your work in the lab.
What happens if I am selected to participate in the SRTP and my spring SEMESTER/QUARTER ENDS AFTER the move-in date (if in-person)?
You are still eligible to participate in the program, but you must contact us to discuss whether it is possible for you to join the program after the start date. Where possible, participants are urged to arrange for early examinations so they can benefit from the full curriculum and experience.
How are participants placed with faculty mentors?
The SRTP admissions committee will assign mentors based upon your research interests expressed in your application and experience.
If I intend to apply to a medical school, school of dentistry, school of nursing, or a school of pharmacy in the future, am I eligible to participate in the SRTP?
No. The SRTP is intended specifically for students who plan to pursue a PhD, and it is specifically geared towards those preparing for research degrees. (See list.) What is the application deadline?
Applications are due by February 1, 2024 (11:58 p.m. PST).
Can I make changes to my application after it's been submitted?
No changes can be made to an application once it's been submitted.
What is the expected time commitment of the program?
Students are expected to participate in up to forty (40) hours per week. This forty hour commitment will include research, professional development, group meetings, and community building activities.
Do NOT contact faculty members directly to request a placement. All placements MUST be coordinated and approved by the faculty committee. Doing so may disqualify you from consideration.
